Medical Articles by Dr. W.H. Bates
This document contains all 31 medical articles published by Dr. W.H. Bates between 1891 and 1923. The majority (15 of the 30) were published in the New York Medical Journal; eleven were published in various other medical journals; one in the Bridgeport Telegram, and one in Hearst’s International.
In addition there were three articles published in French medical journals between 1912 and 1921; these three have been included at the end (both in French and in English translation).

These thirty-one articles span most of Dr. Bates’ 45-year career as an ophthalmologist and they reflect the gradual change in his practice: away from the traditional medical methods of his early years as an eye doctor, to the variety of relaxation techniques used during the majority of his long career.

It has taken me about a decade to gather these articles and complete the collection. I hope that making them available again now, in searchable text format, a century since the last publication, will contribute to a
deeper understanding of the Bates Method by both teachers and students. Old spelling in these articles has been left unchanged.

Internet growth by 2024 led to more extensive archives of medical
journals being available, which enabled me to update this collection
with better images and two original articles that had been missing.
I have also deleted the oldest two articles from 1886 and 1887 which
were related to the ears, because to my surprise, I found there had been
a second W.H. Bates, M.D. in New York who published medical
articles as early as 1877, well before ‘our’ William H. Bates started his
career as an ophthalmologist. I therefore assume that any medical
articles on ears from those early years should probably be attributed to
the older W.H. Bates, M.D. who was likely an otolaryngologist.
I trust you’ll appreciate this more complete and updated publication!
